The People of Myrna
Presented by Cutter
Here we find the Non-Player Characters of the Myrna universe. They are listed in order of appearance in the game, by location. Here are the locales to choose from . . .
Wessex The Moathouse Trumbidore Nulb The Temple Arneb
Ostler and his wife => Innkeeper of the Inn of the Welcome Wench. Friendly, definitely pro-party.Joseph and Martha => New trading post proprietors. Sierra’s parents. Definitely pro-party.
Rannos Davl => Former trading post proprietor. Was going to sell Joseph and Martha into slavery until the party stopped him. Definitely NOT pro-party.
Elmo => Acting sheriff of Wessex. Accompanied the party on its first few forays into adventuring. Pro-party.
Elmer Gantry => Elmo’s father. Captain of the village militia. He has helped in the training of the fighters, but mostly he stays out of the way. Pro-party.
Burt => Village Elder. Chief High Mucky-Muck of Wessex. He knows all the who’s who of those who deserve to be known, but tends to keep a tight lip about it. Neutral to the party. His priority is the safety of his village.
Rufus => Currently acting as the village wizard. Actually, he’s stationed at the guard tower to see that it gets built in proper order. Neutral to the party. His priority is his loyalty to the Crown. He tends to be helpful when there’s gold involved.
Burne => Currently stationed at the guard tower in charge of the soldiers that defend it. He has helped train the fighters when needed. But otherwise remains neutral.
Jaroo => Druid of the Grove. He’s one of the two spiritual leaders of the village, and the one Vesta goes to for advice and training. Currently, he’s brought two party members back to life, so I’d say he’s definitely pro-party.
Terjon and Calmert => Terjon is the chief cleric of the Church of St. Cuthbert and Calmert is his able assistant. Currently, Terjon is in competition with Jaroo for the role of chief spiritual leader and seems to be envious of his relationship with the party. But he is helpful when asked. Calmert is younger, mid 20’s or so. Terjon keeps him busy, so he doesn’t have time to hang wit da’ homies, but he’s friendly and helpful when called upon.
Also, throughout the village there are other types of people
that have never been named, but are valuable nonetheless. There’s
a stingy moneylender, bountiful and beautiful tavern wenches, happy children
and sturdy craftsmen. Craftsmen of note, which I can remember off
the top of my head, are…a wainwright, a blacksmith, a teamster, a tailor,
a leather worker, and a miller. Not to mention countless farmers,
laborers and orchard tenders. Another site of which to make note
is the campsite near the guard tower, in the eastern end of town.
This campsite houses 25-30 laborers brought in to work on the guard tower
and the surrounding battlements. Any given laborer is only stationed
here for two weeks before he is sent home to rest and re-familiarize himself
with his family. Thus, it is virtually impossible to get to know
any specific worker.
At the Moathouse…
The Moathouse was the first phase of this little adventure, so I don’t recall any real efforts to get to know any of the denizens encountered therein. However, since I’m the one writing this, I’ll mention any parts I damn well please.
The Priest Commander => He never gave his name, but when you tried to question him Vesta got so worked up, that she caused him to spontaneously combust. At least, that’s the way it looked. It may be that his deity didn’t want him chickening out and answering some questions that didn’t need to be answered. Even though this NPC is dead, I mention him because he was an important figure in the local politics. He may be mentioned later.Jacob => This is also the first instance where you encounter the malign entity later to become known as Jacob. At the time, he didn’t do anything to you. However, when Hunter tried to attack him, he just stood there. If he’d had a face, he would have laughed at you like a schoolyard bully. Then, he cast a darkness spell and disappeared into thin air.
Lubash => Not an NPC, but certainly a memorable role-playing experience if you ask me. Lubash, an Ogre, was the priest commander’s prison warden. He kept whatever prisoners there were until the sacrificial fires were prepared. One of the prisoners at the time was Sierra, who has since joined the party. His favorite battle cry is “LUBASH SMAAAASH!” Not to be confused with his favorite breakfast cereal, “LUBASH CRUNCH! ™”.
In The Village of Trumbidore…
Matron Diamondriver => Doran Diamondriver’s mother. When Doran was killed it was her wish that the village elder remove his favor from the party.Doran Diamondriver => Doran was a Gnome illusionist of some skill that joined the party after the Bugbear raid. He was only with the party for a brief time. He was killed in the attack on Nulb.
Michelle and Rhysa => Two novice magicians enlisted and by Lord Ichabod of Arneb to help in the Bugbear attack on Trumbidore. They were not killed in the attack because they were never a serious threat. The magical items that they had been given by Ichabod were taken away, and they were shipped back to Arneb.
Samwise => Leader of Trumbidore. He is friendly to your cause but was forced to ban you from the village when Matron Diamondriver requested it. He promises that once Doran is avenged, the doors will be open to you once again.
Froderick => This is the Gnome that got Dodger involved in politics. He’s skilled in the subtle arts of spying, but is not a spy himself. Or, so he claims. He told Dodger about the assassination attempt against the Queen, and appealed to his sneaky and reward-minded nature for help. He hasn’t been seen since Dodger returned from Arneb.
The Village of Nulb…
Dick Rentch => Bartender at the local inn. He’s your typical weasel-faced, beady-eyed scoundrel.Mother Screng & Murfles => Mother Screng is an apothecary and Murfles is her daughter. Both are rather homely women, but very friendly. When the party attacked Tolub’s ship and Sierra was lost, Mother Screng found her and nursed her back to health.
Otis => Local blacksmith. Short on words, large on heart (and muscle for that matter.) He is an associate of Mother Screng, perhaps her son.
Tim => Hired as a horse boy in Wessex, he betrayed the party in Nulb. The party had to split up in order to keep an eye on the horses in such a scurvy-riddled town. Tolub and his crew kidnapped the party that was staying with the horses. (Dodger, Dallben and Tim.) When they were found, Dodger and Dallben were still bound and gagged while Tim was free. He claims to have escaped and was returning for help, but it was later revealed that he was in league with Tolub, and he was shot in the back for his good service.
Tolub => Pirate, slave trader, murderous fiend, and all-around bad attitude kind of guy. The party first heard of him back in Wessex when they rescued Joseph, Martha and their two youngest daughters. Later on, during your month of training after the Moathouse was cleared out, Hunter single-handedly foiled a slave auction that was sponsored by our judicially challenged friend here. During the attack on his ship in Nulb, he was seen with the ever-enigmatic Jacob. This tied him into the Priest Commander of the Moathouse. He said something about being upset with the party for interfering with his business right before he plunged a dagger into Hunter’s gut. Lucky for Hunter, he didn’t die, just got really angry. It was during this attack that Doran Diamondriver and Morgana were killed and Sierra was lost for several days. In one form or another, the party has been pursuing him ever since.
Morgana => Daughter of Aerik the Red. She popped in on the party quite unexpectedly. Xelant had recognized her from his years at the Academy in Arneb. She was a wild mage with some peculiar tastes and passions. She immediately endeared herself to the party by handing out magical items that have since become invaluable. (i.e. Hunter’s Girdle of Giant Strength, Usul’s Pick, etc.) She was killed in the attempt to rescue Dodger and Dallben.
At The Temple…
Smigmal Redhand => Nasty little half-Orc bitch wanted for murders just about everywhere. She was first encountered when the party made its maiden attack on the Temple. It was just after the party had fought off nearly two dozen guards. Smigmal snuck up behind Vesta and nearly killed her. However, since she was invisible when she did this, she was able to escape. Later, as the party was digging deeper into the Temple, they came face to face with Smigmal again and were able to defeat her. In a brief investigation of her personal items, the party learned that she and Falrinth were in league with Tolub. Her mission was to lower morale throughout all of Abraxis in order to make it easier to wage war against it.Falrinth => This is the mage that accompanied Smigmal Redhand. Nothing much was learned about this fellow before he was killed in combat with the party, or afterward for that matter. He had a good assortment of potions and magical items, though. Not the least of which was a Mirror of Mental Prowess.
Isaac => Found chained to Smigmal's wall. The only thing that the party really knows about this fellow is that he likes squash. He considers it to be the solution to all problems. He claims to have been captured as he was wandering in a field looking for dinner, squash of course. He was captured by Tolub and taken to his camp. Then, he was sold to Smigmal for torture practice. It took some time to decipher his squash laden vocabulary, but he eventually gave the party a place to start looking for Tolub's camp. The following day, he left without a trace.
In Arneb…
Not everyone in the party has been to Arneb (i.e. the capitol of
Abraxis). The following is a list of people that have come up in
conversation at some point.
Aerik the Red => Morgana’s father. He introduced himself in the form of a Summoning Writ. (A magical letter that allows two wizards to speak face to face rather than through regular correspondence.) He put the party on a quest to bring Tolub to justice for the murder of his daughter.Serelindria =>Guild Mistress of the After Dark Society thieves guild. Their “above-board” business if that of a high-classed brothel. Secretly, their purpose is unclear. Dodger encountered her on his quest to prevent the assassination of Queen Sara. Her reasons for helping were never given, but the information and tools she supplied were invaluable in Dodger’s quest.
Nikki => An associate of the Second Story Club, another thieves guild. The Second Story Club, as its name implies, specializes in breaking and entering. Publicly, they operate several very lucrative stores that sell all sorts of items. Dodger also came across this organization during his quest in Arneb. Nikki’s task was to provide Dodger with some contacts and some high-wire training. There was some difficulty due to his fear of heights, but he made it through.
Lord Ichabod => The driving force behind the assassination attempt on Queen Sara. Actually, it turned out to be an attempted attempt. Dodger managed to foil the plans before Ichabod could recruit a killer. Formerly, he occupied the position of High Chancellor, the head of all the administrative offices of the government. A Secretary of State of sorts. He managed tax collection, certain legal matters between businesses and the public. That sort of thing. He’s been imprisoned ever since Dodger set him up, but nothing has been heard of him since. As Dodger was investigating him, he discovered a line of correspondence between him and Tolub. The letters were vague, though. There is no clear indication as to who is in charge.
Queen Sara => Matriarch of the Holy Nation of Abraxis. Dodger is the only party member to have met the Queen face to face. Publicly, she denied the existence of a secret operative working within the palace on her behalf. Privately, she thanked Dodger for his help and she gave him a deed that officially placed the land around the Moathouse under the control of the local sheriff, that being Elmo. The land will be treated as a public park, and the Moathouse itself will be placed under guard until such time as someone can make a legal claim on the land. (i.e. buy it.) She has kept this matter quiet, so the only people who know about it are the party members, herself and Elmo. Everyone else thinks the Moathouse belongs to the government and thus will leave it alone.
Lord Hershel => High Marshall of Abraxis, commander of the army. He was hosting a party at the palace the day Dodger made his infiltration. There was a visiting diplomat from Muldavia in town and it was Hershel’s duty to greet him, because the Queen was away and he was the most senior member of her staff. Also, he personally knew the diplomat in question. Dodger never found out the name of the visitor.
Master Gadfrey => Dean of the Arnebian Academy of the Arcane. He was Xelant’s employer prior to his departure on a life of adventure. His name comes up every now and then when Xelant needs some obscure information or wants to get in touch with a certain wizard.
